OnePlus 6T Gets Verizon Certification, Geekbench Scores Also Surface

The upcoming flagship from OnePlus, has crossed another milestone. The OnePlus 6T has passed Verizon’s certification labs, according to reports. This means that the smartphone will be the first OnePlus device to be compatible with the US based carrier. If the reports are true, it will boost the expansion of OnePlus in the US market. Other reports also show the Geekbench listing of the device.

    OnePlus & Verizon

Along with the deal with Verizon, the company is also working on a partnership with T-Mobile in the US. The partnership with various mobile carriers will make sure that the device is known to more Americans, most of whom are not familiar with the company. The deal with these major mobile carriers will pave the way for OnePlus’s entry into the US market as well. Reports also suggest that the deal with Verizon can also carry on for future devices. This future device might be the 5G enabled phone that OnePlus is planning to release next year, most probably the OnePlus 7.

    Geekbench Scores

The Geekbench listing of the device shows that it runs on Android 9 Pie and the Snapdragon 845 SoC. The device has 8 GB of RAM. The listing shows a single core score of 2,387 and a multi core score of 8,925. This is pretty similar to the performance of the OnePlus 6 and the scores on the retail device might be even higher considering that this is a pre-production unit.

The most exciting feature on the OnePlus 6T is its in-display fingerprint scanner. According to reports, the OnePlus 6T has a water-drop notch on its 6.41 inch Super AMOLED display. The device is running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with 6 GB and 8 GB RAM variants. It packs a 3,700 mAh battery and runs on a brand new version of the Oxygen OS. The device does however, lack a headphone jack. The OnePlus 6T is also rumoured to have microSD card support, which will be a first for OnePlus devices. The device also has a new and improved night mode to enhance its low-light performance.

The alleged pricing and variants of the OnePlus 6T are also available. The device will launch on October 29.

  • Yahoo Messenger Is Being Killed Off On July 17th 2018

Yahoo Messenger Is Being Killed Off On July 17th 2018

Anyone who grew up in the early 2000’s knows two things about the internet – the dial-up tone and Yahoo Messenger. Long before Snapcha and Facebook Messenger, there was the ultimate social media platform, Yahoo Messenger. The instant messaging app, which is now run by Verizon-owned Oath will shut down on July 17th.

Oath will be redirecting its users (if any) to its new group messaging app, Squirrel. The company is encouraging users to sign up for Squirrel which the company has been beta testing since May. Squirrel is currently invite-only, but the app should be open to the public by the time Yahoo Messenger shuts down.

We know we have many loyal fans who have used Yahoo Messenger since its beginning as one of the first chat apps of its kind. As the communications landscape continues to change over, we’re focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs.

The death of the Messenger has been imminent. In 2016, Yahoo was acquired by Verizon for US$ 4.6 billion. Verizon renamed the business as Oath and started selling off parts of Yahoo. The company recently sold Flickr, a popular photo-sharing app to SmugMug. As was with the case of Flickr, Yahoo Messenger could not cope with the rise of social media apps like Facebook and then instant messaging services like WhatsApp.

Yahoo Messenger made its debut in 1998 as Yahoo Pager. For many years, it became the sole IM service that teens and adults used across the globe. From anonymous chat rooms to set a status message, Yahoo Messenger did it first. While it is fair to romanticise a fallen legend, the reality is that the Messenger faded away. While Squirrel is what Oath is working on, it isn’t a like-for-like replacement of Yahoo Messenger.

There currently isn’t a replacement product available for Yahoo Messenger. We’re constantly experimenting with new services and apps, one of which is an invite-only group messaging app called Yahoo Squirrel (currently in beta).

Its users will have up to 6 months after July 17th to download their Messenger chat history. Their Yahoo email ID will continue to work and users will be able to access Yahoo Mail or log in to any other services using their email ID. The writing was on the wall for the end of  the Yahoo! era and the killing off of Yahoo Messenger is just another brick in that wall.

  • Verizon Phases Out 3G; Is it Already Time We Add it Amongst Obsolete Technology?

Verizon Phases Out 3G; Is it Already Time We Add it Amongst Obsolete Technology?

Just a couple of years back, 3G was all the rage in India. With massive investment in advertising, we were made to believe 3G would deliver lightning fast speed and make our life a lot easier. But even after a considerably long time, 3G is still catching up in this country. The connectivity is still pathetic and rarely do we get the speeds which are advertised. But while 3G is still in the process of finding itself, 4G LTE has come to the country and is fast setting up shop at various places in India. Meanwhile in the US, communication giant Verizon seems ready to phase out its 3G network as the 4G LTE services are fast picking up speeds.

Wireless tracker Milan Milanovic is reports that Verizon is now providing LTE services off its 1900 MHz band which is usually reserved for 3G data. The company says that it is just a test, and they are not making any active transition. Testing is the right way forward as better technology slowly supersedes the previous generation by offering better services. And just like Cassettes, CD’s, 1G and 2G before it, 3G will also be shown the door someday. But not for now. Even with the high costs and low connectivity, 3G services are still showing growth.

In the grand scheme of the mobile world, there have been four generations of service that provided connectivity between the portable devices. First there was the analog cellphones which came under 1G(the G stands for generation) followed by digital phones that came under 2G. Then came 3G, which was dubbed the mobile broadband. If provided right, 3G services are capable of speeds up to 400Kbps to almost ten times that speed.  Finally, we come to 4G which is also known as LTE(Long Term Evolution). Though LTE is one of the components of 4G technology along with HSPA+ 21/42, WiMAX but LTE is the most prominent of all, and it is considered true 4G because of its high mobile speeds.

There has been a barrage of LTE capable devices around the world including India. All major network providers are fast setting up the network. LTE capable devices are also arriving at sub Rs. 10,000 price range, which not only makes them future ready but also future proof. In many nations, 4G networks are fast becoming the norm. By about 2016, the first LTE only phones will start arriving into the market. So 3G still has a considerably long time before its bags are packed and shelved.

4G, like its predecessor, is fast arriving to replace the previous generation technology. As we move towards a purely data based communication system, where apps are fast replacing voice calling and SMS, we can expect a demise of 3G by the end of the decade. Instead, it might get replaced by 4G and public Wi-Fi’s with high speeds and all round coverage. By shifting to voice-over-LTE, networks can offer all mobile features in one service. Seems like there are only happy times ahead for the mobile world.

It would also include both 6-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras, and Nokia may complement the previously mentioned 32GB of storage with a microSD card slot. The only real thing that needs to be found is what OS it will run between an option of Windows 8, RT and Windows Phone. Verizon Launches Droid Maxx, Droid Ultra and Droid Mini, Motorola Phones that India may never see!

US carrier Verizon today launched three new Motorola phones which may truly change the way the world looks at the Google owned mobility company. Motorola and Verizon have launched a trio of phones which focus on all those things that have come to be the envy of smartphone owners,

Starting with the Droid Ultra which is a 5-inch smartphone that the company claims is “all about thin,”. The Droid Ultra sports a glossy, unibody Kevlar shell that makes it thinner (7.18mm) yet stronger than its predecessors.

The Droid Ultra sports a dual-core X8 Mobile Computing System delivers about 24 percent faster processing  and double the graphics capabilities on all aspects. The Droid Ultra ships August 20th for $199, and pre-orders are starting today. The Droid Ultra will be available in Black and Red models.

The Droid Maxx on the other hand is designed for a long lasting Android experience, it sports a massive 48-hour battery life and is apparently 9 percent thinner than the RAZR Maxx HD. Just like the Droid Ultra, the phone is said to be 24% faster and double in the graphics department 10-megapixel camera out back that’s capable of shooting 1080p HD video. The Droid Maxx has wireless charging and a 3500mAh battery.

Finally the Droid Mini comes with a 4.3 inch display 1.7GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of onboard storage (with 2GB of RAM), a 2130 mAh battery and a 10-megapixel camera with 1080p video capture. The Droid Mini goes on sale for US $ 99 and comes with wireless charging capabilities.

The Motorola Verizon Droid phones aim to focus more on experience and less on the specs of these handsets. The handsets get the new Droid Command Center homescreen widget with access to notifications, weather updates and more, as well as quick capture to take photos with a double-shake.The three phones will also include voice capabilites as leaked in the Moto X and the Droid handsets can apparently be woken on voice command by saying, “Ok Google Now.”

MINI, ULTRA and MAXX: Cutting-edge design meets strength and agility.

A new family of exclusive DROID smartphones is coming soon to Verizon Wireless: DROID MINI, DROID ULTRA and DROID MAXX by Motorola. Keeping up with the DROID tradition, these devices give users what’s expected from a DROID on Verizon – intelligence, strength and endurance.

It starts with DROID Command Center, an exclusive homescreen widget for users to easily access notifications for text messages, missed calls, battery level and weather. It also serves as the gateway to new features including Wireless Display to mirror what’s on the screen onto a compatible HDTV to play games, browse the web and share pictures on a big screen.

Taking a picture and sharing it is now as easy as shake, tap and swipe. Quick Capture lets users access the 10-megapixel camera by shaking the phone twice, then tapping anywhere on the screen to snap a pic or a selfie. Sharing with a friend or a group of friends nearby is simple with the DROID Zap feature. Swiping up on a picture instantly shares it with fellow new DROID owners nearby, all they need to do is swipe down on their screen to receive it.

Hands are full or messy? Wake up the DROID by saying “Ok Google Now” and then tell it what you want to do. And for those users who constantly lose their phone under the couch or around the house, they can simply say “Ok Google Now, call my DROID” and it will start ringing. And Active Notifications lets users preview messages and app alerts without waking their phone.

These Touchless Controls and Active Display let users make calls, send texts, get directions, play music, set a reminder and preview notifications hands-free without having to unlock the phone, giving DROID users a whole new way of interacting with their phones.

The first DROID launched in November 2009 and included features new at the time such as Google Maps Navigation. It was also the first smartphone to feature Android 2.0. The new trio of DROID devices continues to give innovative features.

DROID MINI: A compact design with an edge-to-edge 4.3-inch HD display and wireless charging capabilities.

DROID ULTRA: The thinnest 4G LTE smartphone available, measuring 7.18mm, and with a 5-inch HD display. The ULTRA will be available in Black and Red models.

DROID MAXX: Features wireless charging and a 3500mAh battery that gives users nearly two days of battery life on a single charge, making it the longest lasting 4G LTE smartphone available.

The DROID ULTRA and DROID MAXX will be available for purchase starting Aug. 20 and the DROID MINI will be available starting Aug. 29. • Don’t like the new iPhone 4s, Pre-order sales show otherwise

Don’t like the new iPhone 4s, Pre-order sales show otherwise

Apple iPhone 4s left a lot of hearts disappointed, including ours for a bit. But, looks like a trend has actually emerged from the depths of Apple , iPhone 3G gives 3Gs and iPhone 4 gives 4s.

Anyway more about that later, the topic of the moment is that people are disappointed by the release of the iPhone 4s not being close to expectations, but Apple numbers speak otherwise. In the US alone Apple received orders for over 600,000 units in the first 12 hours. This does not account for other countries where the device was released. Expect the number to be in several millions.

The device is already sold out on all online stores and delivery is now pushed back to several weeks. Still dislike the iPhone 4s upgrade? Apple says Cha-ching !
