Xiaomi Announces Three New Smartphone Assembly Plants And One PCBA Manufacturing Plant In India

Xiaomi India has inaugurated three new smartphone assembly plants in India. These new plants are located in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, which are capable of producing one smartphone in two seconds. Additionally, the company has also launched its first-ever PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) unit located in Tamil Nadu.

Manu Jain, Vice President, Xiaomi Global and Managing Director, Xiaomi India said:

In 2015 we extended our long-term commitment to the Indian market by joining the ‘Make in India’ programme. Today we are deepening this commitment with three more smartphone factories and our first SMT plant dedicated towards local manufacturing of PCBA units.

Xiaomi is one of the pioneers in the country to start local assembly of PCBAs, and I believe we will continue to play a key role in transforming India into a global manufacturing hub.

Xiaomi started to assemble it’s smartphones in India in 2015 under the ‘Make In India’ initiative from the Central Government. As of now, 95% of the Xiaomi smartphones sold in India are ‘Made in India’. To be precise these devices are assembled in India by importing components from China. Making/Assembling a smartphone locally will help the company to save tax and will enable faster distribution of these devices. With these new smartphone assembly plants, the company creates employment to 10,000 people. Additionally, 95% of the employment will be reserved for females.

Xiaomi has partnered with Foxconn to manufacture PCBA units using the Surface Mount Technology in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. PCBA units constitute for the 50 percent of the cost of a smartphone and by assembling in India, the company will save a ton of money on import duties. Xiaomi will produce 100% of PCBA units used in Xiaomi smartphones launched in India will be manufactured in India by the end of Q3 2018.

  • OnePlus 5T Star Wars Limited Edition Announced

OnePlus 5T Star Wars Limited Edition Announced

It appears that OnePlus has decided to jump aboard the Star Wars hype train this year. At the Bengaluru Comic Con, the Chinese smartphone maker announced the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Limited Edition which most likely go on sale close to the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in second week of December.

If you’re bored of the same old grey and black colour phones then the OnePlus 5T Star Wars edition does bring a different colour scheme to the table. It has a white colour finish at the back along with the red colours Star Wars logo beneath the fingerprint sensor. Another interesting thing here is that the alert slider is also red in colour. The phone will also ship with default Star Wars themes, ring tones, and effects.

A report claims that only 15000 such units will be made and it will be an India exclusive device. It further claims that the device will be unveiled on the 16th of December at an event in Mumbai. There is no word on the price of the phone yet.

OnePlus 5T Has A 6-inch Display With Thin Bezels

Other than the colours and exclusivity of the device, nothing will change in terms of hardware or software.

The OnePlus 5T has a 6-inch Full Optic AMOLED display with a 2160 x 1080 px resolution and an 80.5% screen to body ratio. This is a huge detour from the short history of OnePlus devices which have so far had a 5.5-inch display.

Under the hood, the OnePlus 5T has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, a 2.4GHz octa-core processor, 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of onboard storage which cannot be expanded. Powering the device is a 3300 mAh battery which supports OnePlus’ DashCharge technology.

The OnePlus 5T runs stock Android 7.1.1 Nougat with customisability options thanks to the Oxygen OS on top. OnePlus has promised an update to Android 8.0 Oreo by early 2018. The Android 8.0 Oreo beta update will be pushed out to OnePlus 5T in late December 2017.

Due to thin bezels, there is no place for a home button and the fingerprint sensor has now been shifted to the back of the phone and is placed right above OnePlus logo. The OnePlus 5T also features facial recognition for unlocking the device.

One big change in the OnePlus 5T is in the camera department. Unlike the OnePlus 5, the OnePlus 5T no longer has a secondary telephoto lens at the back. Instead, OnePlus has decided to focus on the device’s low-light photography capabilities. The cameras do not have OIS and OnePlus has decided to go for EIS on the dual camera setup at the back. The device has a 16MP camera with an f/1.7 aperture coupled with a 20MP sensor with the same f/1.7 aperture and field of view, ie no optical zoom. On the front is a 20MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

  • Xiaomi Teases New ‘Made In India’ Smartphone Launch

Xiaomi Teases New ‘Made In India’ Smartphone Launch

Xiaomi India recently announced the opening of a new facility in India strictly dedicated to making its new power bank, the Mi Power Bank 2i. Now, it appears that a new smartphone specifically made in India and for the Indian audience, will be launched very soon.

In the tweet, it is visible that Xiaomi is clearly targeting the Indian audience with a smartphone that will be a part of its ‘Make In India’ project. So far, most of the smartphones from Xiaomi that launch in India are first launched in China and then renamed for the Indian audience and unveiled in India.

The recently launched Xiaomi Mi A1 was also just the Xiaomi Mi 5X which was launched in China but, with stock Android OS.

Xiaomi could launch a smartphone under the Rs 5000 bracket which will compete with the likes of other Indian brands.

This new phone could even be the Redmi Note 5 which will make sense, as the Redmi Note 4 has been the company’s most successful smartphone in India. The Redmi Note 5 already has a lot of anticipation in the Indian market and if the phone is a part of the company’s ‘Make In India’ project, then it will increase the Redmi Note 5’s desirability even more.

Xiaomi has already launched about 8 devices in India so far, and in a recent chat with Mr. Manu Kumar Jain, VP of Xiaomi, he said that the company is satisfied with the products it has in all the price segments. What is missing however, is a phone made in India, and this could be Xiaomi’s entry to that smartphone market.

    Leaked Redmi Note 5

According to a recent leak of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, the Redmi Note 5 will have Snapdragon 625 chipset. The phone also has a 5.99 inch display with a very 2017-like 18:9 ratio and Full HD+ (2160 x 1080 px) resolution.

The phone shows 54GB of storage available, meaning that the variant in question here is the 64GB unit. There is at least one camera with a 12 MP sensor and the smartphone runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat.

The device appears to be powered by a 4000 mAh battery and due to thin bezels, the fingerprint sensor is placed at the back of the phone, much like the Redmi Note 4.

  • Razer Teases Its First Smartphone Announcement On November 1st

Razer Teases Its First Smartphone Announcement On November 1st

It seems like Razer will be joining the smartphone race and the announcement will be made as soon as 1st November. For the past few months, Razer has been dropping vague hints about its first ever smartphone and the company took to Twitter to share the news.

The teaser shows a person holding what clearly seems like a smartphone.

In January 2017, Razer acquired Nextbit, the company that made the Android device Robin. This was the first major hint that the company, best known for its gaming accessories for PCs and consoles, along with high-end PC gaming laptops, was planning to enter the smartphone market.

A few weeks ago, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan confirmed that the company was going to launch a mobile device before the end of 2017, and that it would be focused on “gaming and entertainment”. Last week, a Twitter post by Tom Moss, the head of Razer’s mobile division, had him standing next to Tan, who had what appears to be a conveniently covered prototype of Razer’s phone in his pocket.

There is not much known about the smartphone except for the fact that it will concentrate on gaming and content consumption, and that it’ll be powered by Android. Considering the premium price tag of most of the products that have Razer’s name on it, the smartphone could enter the flagship category dominated by the likes of Apple, Samsung and Google.

  • LG Confirms Switch To OLED Display For The Upcoming V30

LG Confirms Switch To OLED Display For The Upcoming V30

LG has announced that its next flagship device will be the ‘first smartphone from LG to sport a plastic OLED FullVision display.’ The LG V30 was widely reported to feature an OLED display and this announcement confirms those rumours. LG has specified that it’ll be a FullVision display much like the one on the G6. It’s worth noting that LG will feature POLED technology on a smartphone for the first time since the G Flex 2, which was launched a couple of years ago.

The upcoming smartphone will be smaller than last year’s V20 despite sporting a larger 6-inch display. LG claims to have reduced the top and bottom bezels by 20 per cent and 50 per cent respectively while the LG logo is moved to the back of the device. The Plastic OLED screen on the device means that the edges can be curved for a more ergonomic fit in the user’s hand. Although from the image released, it doesn’t seem like LG has taken Samsung’s route of fully curved edges. A Corning Gorilla Glass 5, which incorporates shatter-resistance technology will protect the screen.

    LG V30 render leaks

The screen resolution will be 1440 x 2880, which translates to a QHD+ display and enhance the device’s VR capabilities. The advantage of an OLED display is the operational response time, which is a lot faster than LCD. This accelerated response time effectively eliminates afterimages, an important consideration for action movies and VR.

Along with a POLED display, the LG V30 is rumoured to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Chipset with 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage. The device will be powered by a 3,300mAh battery with support for wireless charging. On the camera front, it will take the G6’s route and sport a 13MP dual-camera setup along with a fingerprint sensor at the back.

The LG V30 is expected to launch at the IFA 2017 in Berlin on August 31. Rumoured to be priced at around USD 700 (approximately INR 45000), it will compete with the soon-to-be-announced Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

  • Samsung Announces 6 GB RAM for Phones

Samsung Announces 6 GB RAM for Phones

Samsung has proved its presence cannot be ignored in the tech world irrespective of the ruckus being kicked up around it. Following the news of the new iPhones, the company made an announcement in a press release last night about its 12 GB mobile DRAM chips. This has just opened the door for 6 GB smartphones in the near future because the 12Gb LPDDR4 enables 3 GB or 6GB of mobile DRAM in a single package by simply using two chips and four chips respectively.

Samsung says that “compared to the preceding 20nm-based 8Gb LPDDR4, the 12Gb version is more than 30% faster at 4,266Mbps, and is twice as fast as DDR4 DRAM for PCs, while consuming 20 percent less energy.” It goes on to comment that these chips won’t be confined to just phones but hopefully would be available for “ultra-slim PCs, digital appliances and automotive device,” as well. One of the advantages of having a high RAM is that it makes multi-tasking on the device incredibly smooth.

Currently, even the fanciest of Samsung phones do not go beyond 4 GB of RAM. However, a 6 GB phone sometime next year shouldn’t come as a surprise now that the official announcement about the technology has been made.

Alongside the iPad Mini, Apple will also reportedly update the Macbook Pro 13 inch and offer a retina version of the laptop. A new Mac Mini, revised Cinema displays and iMac are also long overdue.

But its unlike Apple to announce so many products at a single event.
