data is needed to load maps, download offline maps, or find a way to cache maps on your phone and you wont require data / edge/ gprs etc for maps and gps location tracking, but for navigation you will require a data connection. GPS is independent of GPRS , but software needs an active data connection to refresh.

  • Ajinkya

I saw review of galaxy 5. I would like to know if GPS in it works without data connection or it mandatorily needs either edge/gprs or 3g data connection?

@shahzad javed: Android seems to be a better bet over nokia for such requirements. go for the galaxy 3 or Wildfire if you stretch your budget.

    @tejas:

The message capacity depends on the storage you choose, if you choose memory card, than on the capacity of your memory card.

  • Avadhoot Velankar

    @ bharat,

i am getting very excited about Huawei Ideos. seems good and only advantage over galexy 5 seems to be inclusion of froyo. well froyo enables mobile hotspot feature by which i can use it as wireless web router. will upgrade to froyo from eclair in galexy 5 add this feature to it, or it is exclusive to huawei hardware.

  • amit

    Hi,

I am using vodafone, i asked them to send GPRS setting but i didnt get it. So customer care guys manually did the setting for my galaxy 5.

But still i am not able to connect to GPRS.
Please let me know if i need to configure in my galaxy 5.
    Please do respond.

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @chandu: Hi,
If your usage is too high then even a 1500mah battery wont solve your problem.
Please turn of wifi and data when not in use
Dim the brightness to what is required and turn of push email support.
The battery life will increase a good deal.

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

I will try to have a review once the device becomes available

  • RAJDEEP

    hi .
will u review the HUAWEI IDEOS ?. .and kindly inform its release date in india .
We are glad to have a site like urs :D .Keep up the good work

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

@Ramu: Hi, to improve battery life, try the Following

    1. Turn off WIFI and Data when not needed (use free app APNDROID)
    2. reduce brightness to minimum required
    3. turn off location services (gps)
    4.Turn Off Push Mail

Try the steps above to massively improve battery life

  • Ramu

@BharathNagpal:Firstly thanks for the review.I have bought this mobile 3 days ago by seeing this review. But i feel that its battery life is poor.So please suggest me,how can i save battery? Please mail me some tips to save battery life.My email ID is ramu.rocks4u@yahoo.com

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    Hi
In both cases gps will work without GPRS , as in, it will locate you , but maps will not work
hence, it will be pointless to use gps without maps.

So, broadly you either need to download offline maps , which can be found in the market place , or use GPRS

  • Rajdeep Mandal

ohhhh…..nooo i cant decide between mi 300 and galaxy 5 ….and does the gps work without Gprs ?

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    Hi,

The fact is really simple they try to target different segments of the market. If they have everything in one phone the other phones Won’t sell. While they choose things which may never be used (7.2 Mbps in India for eg.)

Live wallpapers can be added by running third party apps

  • VST

What I simply wonder is at the inconsistencies that Samsung introduces its into some of phones. I mean what gives it a good reason to have a 3.6Mbpalf s connectivity in Galxaxy3 while Galaxy5 has 7.2 And dear Mr.Bharat could u please ask those guys on my behalf as to how did they forget the Live Wallpapers!!!!!!

  • Ravi

Did samsung say that they will update it?@ Bharat

  • NR

    @ Bharat & ALL –
Dont mind bharat, bt i think U are completely in favour of Samsung & also Discouraging the spice mi 300, But in my opinion Spice mi 300 is far far better in every aspect than the samsung galaxy 5..
    Jst take a look.

    Some Features

    Galaxy 5
    - Screen Size(Pixels) 2.8″ 240×320 QVGA
    - Camera 2MP only
    - LED Flash NO
    -Auto Focus NO
    -Memory capacity Upto 16 GB
    -Multi Touch(Pinch Zoom) NO
    -

    Spice Mi300
    -Screen Size (Pixels) 3.2” 480 x 320, HVGA
    - CAMERA 5 MP
    - LED Flash YES
    -AUTO FOCUS YES
    -Memory capacity Upto 32 GB
    -Multi-Touch (Pinch Zoom) YES
    - G sensor,
    - A GPS,
    - Video rcrdng @ 30 FPS.

The negative side of mi300 is that it doesn’t looks so rich, but Samsung’s Galaxy 5 is also looks like All shitty Corbys. It doesn’t gives U a feel of a smart phone.

    NOW THINK….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • kushal gandhi

can touch wiz in galaxy 5 be disable ??

  • Anubhav

    @Anubhav:

  • Anubhav

    hey,
the review of galaxy5 was awesome …
i am looking for a phone in 10k bracket …
this seems to be the best option … but how is galaxy3 ??
is it worth going to 13k for that ?

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

An update for 2.2 will be out from samsung

  • ankit

i bought galaxy 5 and it cannot be upgraded to 2.2

  • Probal

    Hi Bharat,

Thanks for the review. Did you find any problems getting apps on the Android market for this phone? It is said that many apps will not be installable (or will not appear on the market) on this because its resolution is not HVGA. What was your experience?

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @spy123: Soon ,, very soon :)

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

@smallberry: its not bad infact i feel its a great size for a phone- very pocket friendly, no backlit buttons is another thing all together , difficult in the dark

  • spy123

Thanks for the review. Do you plan to review Galaxy 3 as well? I am looking for bigger screen android phone

  • smallberry

How comfortable did you find the 2.8″ screen? Seems a tad small.

  • http://suvish.co.cc Vishy1618

@Bharat Nagpal: Thanks for the info! Its great to have a India focussed site for these things…

I am intrigued about a generic Froyo build…will have to check it out!

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

@Vishy1618: 2.2 is not out yet from samsung , but A generic build of Froyo 2.2 could possibly be installed.

ram on the galaxy 5 is 256 MB
    Rom is 512 MB

  • http://suvish.co.cc Vishy1618

@Bharat Nagpal: Any idea on when they’ll roll out the upgrade? Or have you already done it?

Another thing, do you guys know how much RAM is on this device? Thanks a lot…I’m looking forward to buy this…

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

@nitin: YES IT IS upgradable to 2.2

  • nitin
