  • Rajdeep

    The 2.1 update is not working it stops after about 75 %

  • Srinivasan

    I am using this for over 3 weeks now and feel great with downloaded applications like document scanner really fast from BSNL 3g and wifi
    I am unable to locate an application for bsnl stream and also unable to launch bsnl live videos/tv
    BSNL customer service has no solution.
    Any solution?
    Also about MMS BSNL

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    Yes it does

  • surya

    dose this support live wallpapers?

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @Phil: have you been able to add gprs settings for the network provider in the settings tab

  • Phil

    Picked up the phone two weeks ago. GPRS EDGE does not work. Battery sucks big time affecting its functionality….. watching YouTube on WiFi makes it restart after a while (memory issues?)

    Screen is great though ( I believe HVGA is minimum for an android phone) and it seems pretty responsive. GPS is good.

  • ami

    dude just remove the plastic film inside battery cover over camera then see the quality,

  • anil

    thanks sumit for the information

  • adav

    I have this phone for over a week my initial observations are..

    pro:
    1==>really nice touch response(much better than galaxy spica)
    2==>with android 1.6, working much smoother

    cons:
    1)really bad camera, you cant take a picture of any document
    2)bad battery life..
    3)with plastic body..built quality is bad..

    though, for a price of 10k seems quite tempting.
    anyway, i have it and i am happy about it(except camera)

  • Ahzam

    Hi
    Anyone was able to use the device in debug mode with PC, with Android Debugger, in my case on windows 7, it doesn’t get detected at all.
    I am wondering if Spice has disabled debugging features on this phone.
    Also, I tried various mechanism of booting this device in recovery mode, doesn’t at all go there.
    Any one tried rooting their Mi300?
    thanks

  • Ahzam

    @Phili:
    I am using WPA. It may also have something to do with your other wifi configuration, or the router that you are using. I earlier had issues with BSNL ADSL wifi router on my nokia devices too. I was not able to transfer large files over wifi, i.e. picture as attachments.

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    Hi

    A generic build is independent of manufacturer customization , it plain google Android how google seeds it , try to google “generic android ” you will get more info. Generic android has limitations and can’t be installed on every device . Manufacturers prevent this . Hence the need for rooting the device .

  • josh

    may i know what is generic version of an android os

  • Dan

    @Saurabh:

    I bought the phone from a Spice Hotspot store in Yeshwanthpur, Bangalore. The Spice website has a full list of the Hotspot stores, which are the only stores (that I know of) which sell this.

    @Saurabh: About the 3G frequency bands – Vodafone and Idea may have 2G 2100 Mhz devices. 3G can only be launched on the band spectrum that has been bid for – check this doc: http://www.dot.gov.in/as/Auction%20of%20Spectrum%20for3G%20&%20BWA/Auction%20results/3G_-_19_May_2010.pdf All spectrums that have been bid for are within the 1900 Mhz 3G band. I’m just saying that since none of the other bands have been bid for as yet, atleast at start, only 1900 Mhz can be supported by non-BSNL networks. Over time, this could expand, as the Govt. allocates more spectrum/bands to providers.

    And to everyone else – a demo videos of the Spice MI 300 in action are available here: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=E2E91772B13E8FBB

  • vik

    thanks dats a gr8 help…!!

  • Phili

    @Ahzam: My WiFi on the Mi300 keeps dropping. Just curious what your encryption mode is.

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    It seems highly unlikely that the mi 300 gets 2.2

  • nitin

    any chnce for 2.2 froyo on this phone??

  • nitin

    does this phone stand a chance for the froyo update?

  • Ahzam

    @Saurabh:

    @Dan:

    After a week of use of the phone, I am getting used to it. In my opinion the following are pros

    1. Android, lot of applications are available and various options are there. But Unless we get to 2.1 it would be full featured. I got few features by way of 3rd party apps, i.e. SMS call blocker, call log , and security applications.

    2. The accelerometer based games work wonder on the device

    3. Decent sensitive display,

    4. It feels good in hand, it is as wide as Motorola A768i and little longer, if you have not used a touch screen phone before it will take a little getting used to it.

    5. Voice clarity is ok, not that great, can not be compared with Nokia and Motorola

    Points I do not like about the phone

    1. Bad camera compared to 5 MP N series cameras, the response time for camera is low, bad for both stills and videos. At least I can’t use it to take quality pictures.

    2. Not so good build quality, looks and feels plastic. I am not sure how long the buttons or even the touch sensitivity will last.

    3. Spice seems to have good service network, but I do not know of their service quality

    4. The Edge network connection seems to go down often on this phone, I am not sure if that is a software issue of hardware issue, specially while dealing with “Android Market” software. I had to do most app download on Wifi

    5. Battery Life, doesn’t exceed 35 hours even with minimal use, which is against the companies claims of battery life.

    6. Android, 1.6 has couple of issues, i.e. active alls goes in background unintentionally, no Bluetooth OBEX or DUN support, dial up networking is only available through USB cable.

    — General

    I tested it on BSNL 3G, i got a fair download and upload speed on 3.5 G network of about 1.2Mbps upload and about 150kbps upload.

    I am not quite sure of the 3G band actions in India, but as I know India follows the European market and they all should come with 2100MHz band, even at present airtel, vodafone and idea are selling USB devices which support only 2100Mhz band, so I do not see an issue there.

    I would personally prefer a Samsung Galaxy 3, for 2K more with much better build quality, and overall phone quality. That 3.5 Mega pixel camera is better than this 5 mega pixel camera and apart from the screen resolution you are not loosing anything else there. That has better battery life too.

  • ravipanai

    @Bharat Nagpal: dear bharat,
    sry to interupt, but you promised a detailed review on this phone. i knew lot of users provided knowledgeful specs,,thanks to dan & lakshay
    please be adviseable that when its coming.

  • ravipanai

    @Dan: brother please advice a detailed review of this phone, so the potential buyers will make up their minds, also how u personally rate this phone on a scale of 10.

  • sumit

    Hi guys i purchased the mi-300 as well last week. got my contacts transferred from my nokia n79. uploaded them on google contacts and they automatically synced with mi-300. tat was cool.

    for the first few days i was using the phone all the time and the battery life seemed poor. but after i turned off the auto-sync and unchecked background data the battery life improved a lot. the people who have it already can try this.

    the apps are the best thing. so many of them to chose from. and they all will work cos it has a 3.2 inch screen. other android phones like xperia x10 mini n samsung devices with smaller screens are not compatible with a lot of apps.

    the touch sensitivity is rly nice and in 10k you cant get better than this. full paisa vasool.

    the os is 1.6 and im tryin to get in touch with the cust care ppl to upgrade it. i think if u take the handset to the service center they will upgrade it but i will try it myself.

    ive been a nokia user for a long time but a basic feature like usb charging is missing in nokia big time. its a rly convenient feature for ppl like me who are in front of pc for long time.

    wanted to get an android phone but didnt wanted to spend a fortune, and in 10k this is a good deal.

  • Saurabh

    @Dan:

    Hey Dan

    Can you please let me know where you bought the phone from..

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @Dan:

    Congrats on your Purchase. and thanks for the info

  • Dan

    Bharat, I bought this phone yesterday, and it supports multi-touch. I was able to pinch-to-zoom within the browser and the gallery, for photos.

    Will try shooting a video of the same, and upload tmrw or something. Let’s see.

  • Dan

    @Ahzam: Not THAT exciting?????????? Seriously?????

    I just want to state a few things for people who may want to buy this phone.

    1. If your budget is 10k, you’re not gonna get a better value for money purchase.

    2. It’s got a digital compass. True, it drains the battery like hell, but it’s there – to use the Google Gesture search, to orient Google Sky Maps, the Layar Browser – it’s useful.

    3. Bought this phone last evening at around 6 PM, and haven’t put it down since. The screen IS good; may not be the best in the market, but it IS good. The touch is EXTREMELY responsive for a budget phone.

    Now, onto the features/specs that make this a killer purchase:

    1. 3G : India is all set to launch 3G (from non-BSNL providers, of course) at the 1900 Mhz band. (Check the doc detailing the bandwidth sold to various providers back in May, at the end of the auction.) BSNL 3G works on 2100 Mhz. Check any Sony Ericsson or HTC phone currently being sold in India, and none of them have 1900 Mhz 3G. Most Nokia phones do, but there too, we have a few without 1900 Mhz band. This makes Spice the only Android phone (I’m not too sure about Samsung’s Android phones, but the Galaxy 3 and Galaxy 5 don’t support 1900Mhz 3G) in India, currently, which can handle India’s upcoming 3G networks. (Forget this point if you’ve got a BSNL SIM – you need 2100 Mhz 3G)

    2. There are several features of this phone which make it trump the low-end Samsung Galaxy 5, which is about 1k cheaper.

    * Way better camera
    * Better screen resolution – this is important, cos not all Apps on the Market are available for a small screen such as the Samsung Galaxy 5′s 320×240 or the Samsung Galaxy 3′s 400×240.
    * Multi-touch: The Samsung Galaxy 5 doesn’t have multi-touch, while the Galaxy 3 does. But the Galaxy 3 is a little less than 2k costlier.

    I guess I’ve said enough. I’ve been having huge fun on this mobile, with tonnes of apps and stuff. I’m more than pleased with it. The clincher for me was the 1900 Mhz band. :)

  • Saurabh

    @Ahzam:

    Hey

    Thanks a lot for your explanation.
    As you are using this phone, can you please give a detailed info and review on how does it performs.

    1) In-spite of so many features and good specifications quoted for the Spice MI300, is it really that cool, or all those details are just to lure the customer.

    2) Does it feel good in hand as far as the make is concerned, or it feels like a Local Made Chinese Phone.

    3) Are all the specifications mentioned on the phone work to its perfection or they are just to be mentioned without much quality.

    4) The one feature which they have mentioned is 5MP Camera and High Quality Video Recording which all the Android Phones in the range of 15K lack. Is the camera really clicks pics at 5MP and the video quality HD??

    5) Any comments on Durability, Longevity and After Sales Service?

    I request you to please address my queries as I don’t know anybody personally who has this mobile.
    Your help is highly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Saurabh

    Samsung Galaxy 5 is the best quality budget Android(2.1) mobile at present in the indian market.Price is around 9000 you may get it for around 8850 after bargaining.It is of good build quality and comes with 2.8″ Capacitive touch,3g,HSDPA 7.2 Mbps,2MP FF camera,A-GPS,WiFi,600Mhz processor,2GB microSD+170mb.
    Very good phone in terms of speed and touch sensitiveness,but the only downside is the smaller screen size but it is very pocket friendly.

    @Lakshay Katyal:

    I am using this phone and after discussion with Bharat and people at spice i have answers for you.

    1. update for this will be available in october
    2. if you use generic 2.1 everything works except fm, for that you need spice branded 2.1 android
    3. Battery is ok not too good not too bad, lasts one whole day with lot of usage wifi gps i use everything alot (so if you dont use all those expect a goot 5-6 hours of talktime)
    4. Spice does not make high capacity batteries. But as Bharat recommended. external powerpacks that use rechargable batteries can charge the phone via usb to make it an excellent companion

    take care

  • Lakshay Katyal

    Hi All,

    First of all thank you all for so many comments on this phone. I too am planning to buy this spice mi-300 but have some queries –

    1) can it be easily upgraded to android 2.1 later and that too without any extra price.
    2) will bluetooth and FM work fine when upgraded to android 2.1
    3) MOST IMP. QUES — when using this model normally …. how long will battery last. how much is its max possible battery backup if i dont use wi-fi. ??
    4) can we get any NEW battery which lasts longer even though it costs extra??

    Please help me solve my queries

    Thanks
    Regards,
    Lakshay

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    camera is decent , sub par 5mp/ there is auto focus.

    gps fairly easily caught a satellite, and wifi browsing is good, no multitouch pinch to zoom etc.

    It could have been priced around 8-9k but wait for our review of the Galaxy 5

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @hp:
    There is a new phone the Samsung galaxy 5. we will review that as soon as tomorrow. then you can decide

  • Akhil kumar

    How is the camera is it even equal to some decent 3.2 Mp cam and is it auto focus? And how is the GPS in it? and Does the Internet browser work well with Wi-Fi? and Is it worth 10,000? Thank’s :)

  • Ahzam

    I agree, the hardware here in Spice Mi300 is not of very good quality, the screen has varied brightness spots, the over all feed doesn’ have good quality. The camera is as good as its not there.
    It does have an issue with EDGE network the connection freezes every few minutes. The battery life isonly one day and a half (Max) in general You will be red to charger dail.
    galaxy 3 and Galaxy 5 comes with android 2.1 which may be a better option

  • hp

    which one is better in camera clarity ,touchscreen and display

  • hp

    if any compitetor of spice mi300 in market , how is samsung monte s5620 as compared to mi 300

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @rupesh:

    No comparison b/w Android and Bada. Its Always Android , from me. But, The hardware on the Spice looks dodgy. So samsung is a better bet.

  • rupesh

    i need to pick a phone this week..so i just nedded to know should i go for the mi 300 or the samsung wave..confused between the 2 OS’s

    nope no info is available. our unit caught a satellite almost instantly, but, then again a lot of people test the hardware indoors. Gps reception is poor in India especially indoors. its best to get a satellite fix outside

    Some basic info on radiation:
    The FCC & IC 1g SAR Limit is 1.6 W/kg (MAX)
    The EU 10g SAR Limit is 2.0 W/kg (MAX)

    Some manufacturers/models and the radiations they emit.

    IPhone 3GS 0.4 – 0.72
    IPhone 4 0.59 (Head)

    HTC P3400/P3400i 0.32
    HTC Wildfire 1.37
    HTC Nexus One 0.867
    HTC HD2 0.725

    Spice C-810 1.87
    Spice QT-52 1.91

    Videocon V1405 1.89
    Videocon V1604 1.97
    Videocon V1750 1.92

    Karbonn K445 1.97
    Karbonn K451 1.89

    Micromax C111 1.85
    Micromax Q3 1.92
    Micromax Q5 1.87
    Micromax Q7 1.78
    Micromax Q55 Bling 1.69
    Micromax W900 1.62
    Micromax X116 1.73
    Micromax X600 1.97

    Even some bigger brands have some (read a few) models which emit higher levels of radiation

    Usage of bluetooth(very low levels)/handsfree is an alternative!

    Note: Additionally using WiFi/3G would cause the phone to emit a higher cumulative radiation!

    Thanks,
    Till

    Hey Bharat,
    Thanks for the review. I heard that the GPS function of the device is not that good. (it fails to lock on to sats). Any idea about that?
    And also is the SAR of the phone specified…specially since it’s an MA6 rebrand.
    Thanks,
    Till

  • rajiv

    @Ahzam: should i buy this phone or htc smart please help me. the camera of spice mi 300 is good or not. how about the screen

  • smallberry

    If you need a phone ASAP and you’re jonesing for Android on the cheap then go for the MI300 otherwise hold out.

    P.S. There are other ways to get an iPhone 4: http://igyaan.in/category/contest/

  • Sumeet

    @Bharat Nagpal:
    Thanks for your quick reply…..
    I will get my Iphone 4 in October as my friend is going to bring it from US for me …..
    So, I should wait till October or should I buy the spice MI300…..

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @Sumeet:

    Hi , there is really no comparison between the two / The iPhone 4 is better with leaps and bounds, and is priced almost 4 times. this is an ultra budget phone. priced at 10,000 see your budget and requirements.

  • Sumeet

    Hi
    I wanted to know that ,should i buy the Spice MI300 or the Iphone 4.
    Please provide me a suggetion……..

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @Ahzam:
    congrats on your new purchase
    We already got word that 2.1 will be available end oct ’10

  • smallberry

    The 1st press shot says 3G on top so that should help clarify it. All in all these are really good features for this price. Too bad many of us would have to pay the Maharashtra markup.

  • Ahzam

    I bought the MI 300, yesterday it came with android 1.6. and there is no way it can be upgraded to 2.1 as of now. I am not sure when the upgrade will be availble. With 1.6 it is an ok phone now that great.
    Its fast responsive, but the display is no where compared to Nokia, Samsung or HTC. The camera is very bad and bluetooth supports only headset profile as of now , i.e. no bluetooth transfers possible. it took me hours to sync my contact from N79 on to this phone.
    The battery was drained in less than 24 hours of heavy GPRS usage and exploration on phone :)
    Unless 2.1 upgrade is available it is not that exciting!!

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @ravi:
    HTC is always a better brand, But, Wildfire is Much more expensive.

    the MI 300 seemed poorly built.
    so if you can afford the wildfire , go for it, else this is also a good option for the price. i mean compared to 10k nokia and SE phones this does a good job of being a smartphone

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @Arjun Malakar:
    edit : okay my bad of course its a 3G phone I mentioned HSDPA 3.5G . So yes its a 3G phone (3.5 infact

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @James Gosling:

    Thanks for your 2 cents.

    i was called by spice to do a review i didnt go myself, i was holding a camera in one hand hence the shakyness.

    3.5″ is the screen size with frame 3.2 is the lcd size.

    Its not like i am boasting the phone like a sales rep. i am just showing of the features.
    HSDPA 3.5G is a feature set on The box. the g got cut out during edit. oops SUE ME!!

  • smallberry

    Looks vaguely reminiscent of the G1. The screen needs to be a bit bigger though but I really can’t complain at that price.

    Also GPS + Maps is a total life saver believe me!

  • ravi

    dear “Bharat Nagpal”
    please advice me, that should i buy this phone or not. I have seen your video, but im still too confused with spice brand, i have another choice as well i.e. wildfire. though it had a qvga screen in compares to mi300′s hvga (it’s good for most android apps)
    please please advice…

  • ravi

    yaar “Aningbo Niumai” in which news paper u saw the advertisement of spice mi 300, cause in TOI it’s missing

  • James Gosling

    Mr.Nagpal,

    You have listed 3.2″ and 3.5″ both as screen sizes. It looks to be a 3.2″ screen. And another thing is that you could’ve demonstrated in the video the About page on the phone just to confirm it’s running 2.1.

    Plus I find it hard to believe, after looking at your credentials, that you said “HSDPA 3.5″.

    I see that you had to review this unit in a store, and those notorious guys agreed as long as you only said good things about the phone to help sales. That is also probably the reason why you had to rush through the video and why you were nervous ( your hands are clearly shaking.)

    Just my 2 cents.

  • Arjun Malakar

    The phone looks impressive at first look for this price. Is this a 3G phone?

  • http://iitian.me Aningbo Niumai

    that’s a pretty quick response. thanx :)

    too bad there’s no secondary camera for video calling. was really excited when i saw the ad in the papers today! oh well, my excitement died.

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @ameya: check out the video i think it will answer your questions

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @hiren: GALAXY 5 is also a competitor, we will be reviewing that device soon.

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @Aningbo Niumai: Will be doing a detailed review soon,
    video is up. No dual cameras, Specs are on spice website as well. http://www.spiceglobal.com/SpiceMobiles/Model.aspx?Id=167 go here and click specs tab below the orange background

  • http://iitian.me Aningbo Niumai

    the spice website didn’t specify the processor and ram. are u sure about the specs?

    what about secondary camera? some of the pictures in the internet suggest one. btw, this phone is a replica of MA6. a chinese made ;)

    any plans to come up with a detailed review? the battery life and the camera quality and the like..

  • ameya

    is it really so gr8 as it looks

  • hiren

    hi…
    b4 this i was confused between samsung galaxy spica n smasung galaxy3…n now spice mi300 has also entered my confusion list…wz ur sugestion???

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @anuj: It looks and performs great, starts to get laggy with too many apps,

  • anuj

    how is it about application performance and it ui

  • http://www.iGyaan.in Bharat Nagpal

    @Ajay kumar: the device we saw came with 2.1

  • Ajay kumar

    Is it 2.1? Because the ad says it is 2.1 ready which also mean that presently it is lower version ( 1.6) which are likely to upgrade to 2.1 in the third qtr of 2010 as announced by other mobile mfrs.
